Manu National Park, Peru
To attract a mate, Andean cock-of-the-rock males spend time displaying at leks (courtship display areas), showing off their brilliant orange plumage by jumping up and down and making low, guttural croaking sounds. To see this entertaining spectacle by Peru’s national bird, you’ll need to head to the cloud forests of the Andes. Manu National Park in southern Peru, one of the world’s most biodiverse areas, is a good place to start. Here, the cock-of-the-rock lekking season runs from August to November (and sometimes later).
