Grey whales

Monterey Bay, California

BBC Wildlife Magazine - - December -

Monterey Bay is a great place to spot whales all year round, but a winter highlight is seeing grey whales as they make their way from the Bering Sea to summer breeding grounds in Baja, California, following this stretch of the Californian coast, from mid-November or early December. Peak observations occur between January and March with the cetaceans making the return trip with calves in spring. A whale-watching trip is the best way to spot them and will also give you the chance to see porpoises, dolphins, seals, sealions, sea otters and orcas.
