Snow leopards

Ladakh, India

BBC Wildlife Magazine - - January -

Once you get to Hemis National Park in Ladakh, you’ll need two days to acclimatise to the altitude, plus guides, permits, cold weather kit, plenty of energy and patience. These elusive and iconic cats are not easy to see, as BBC film crews have discovered when capturing footage. The big cats inhabit a hostile environment that is particularly inaccessible to humans, so set aside as much time as possible to have a proper shot at spotting your quarry. Sightings are the best in winter, from January to March, when Himalayan blue sheep move into the warmer valleys from high peaks and the ‘ghosts of the mountains’ follow.
