I really found Mark Carwardine’s article on the reaction to the Notre Dame fire (My Way of Thinking, June, 2019) an interesting read and I agree with Mark’s sentiment.
The cathedral is held dear in a lot of hearts and inevitably it was huge worldwide news. However, it all comes down to the media. If, for example, BBC News at Six ran a headline bulletin about the plight of the vaquita, then we would see huge responses, and I’m sure a lot of money coming in to help them.
Then if that happens, what about other gravely endangered species – why does one deserve more attention than the other? The media runs the show. James Pinckney, Southampton
