In the Farne Islands, black-headed gulls were attempting to force puffins to drop the sandeels they had collected for their young. Other gulls waited by the puffin burrows to ambush those that dodged the airborne encounter. It was a good year for sandeels, and the puffins, but many birds dropped the vital food for their young.
