Floating on air

-

This photo was taken during a trip to Greece, on Kerkini lake, where a big population of Dalmatian pelicans spends winter. Those that were landing near our boat were reflected in the mirror of the water. I tried panning with my camera, and it let me eventually catch the bird sharp, just a moment before it spoiled the immaculate surface of the lake. Tomasz Szpila, Bulowice, Poland

1 In the shadows Crested black macaques are endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Seeing them in the wild was a humbling experience, as humans are responsible for their biggest challenges. I wanted to capture what would be lost if we don’t protect them. Kevin De Vree, ErpeMere, Belgium

2 Fancy feet Probably the most stylish insect I found in Ecuador – this Amazonian leaffooted bug sits atop a purple porterweed flower. The legs of these bugs have evolved a leaflike appearance as a defence mechanism. Jamal Kabir, Birmingham

3 Water fight This action shot of two hippos fighting was taken early one morning at the Sunset Dam near Lower Sabie camp, Kruger National Park. Antionette morkel, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

4 Treetop treat On a trip to Labahe Nature Reserve, Sichuan, China, we were lucky enough to see five red pandas in one day, all feeding on crab apples. This was the first one we saw in the morning. Ann de Winter, Bedfordshire

5 Eye to eye The relationship between a jackdaw and a deer was something I had always wanted to photograph. I visited Richmond Park, London and, within an hour, I saw this pair and started snapping away. Looking through my photos, I realised I had caught the moment the deer looked right into the jackdaw’s eyes. Rosie Barrett, Essex
