GROWING TOGETHER

The Woodland Trust wants to safeguard our planet’s future

-

When the Woodland Trust was founded, it was one of the first charities working to counter climate change by planting, protecting and restoring trees and woodlands. Now, almost half a century later, it’s inspired hundreds of thousands of people and organisations to become more eco-friendly, becoming the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity in the process.

From planting more native trees to restoring damaged ancient woods, the Woodland Trust has achieved incredible successes, but its work is far from over. It wants to build on the existing 1,000 public, wildliferich native woods it owns today – and you can help.

So far, the Woodland Trust has put more than 50 million trees in Britain’s soil, and by 2025, it plans to have doubled this figure. By supporting the Woodland Trust, you’ll be playing an important part in helping achieve this goal.

WOODED WONDERLANDS

The UK’s woodland is home to a wealth of wildlife, from shadeloving plants and delicate fungi to nesting birds and rare insects. Ancient woodlands, for instance – areas that have been around for so long they’ve developed special communities of plants, animals and fungi not found elsewhere – support a wealth of flora and fauna in the UK.

Sadly, woodland cover in the UK is one of the lowest in Europe, and we need to do more to increase it if we want to help meet the needs of our wildlife. Without our woodlands, we stand to lose more than just trees.

Just take the hazel dormouse, a minuscule creature that spends most of its time asleep, or hidden high-up in tree branches and canopies. Nationally, the population has declined by a half since 2000, and the loss of ancient woodland and hedgerows across the UK is a major factor behind this decline. By restoring our woodlands, we’ll be helping precious wildlife, such as the hazel dormouse, to survive.
