Whale sharks killed by ships

Whale shark numbers have declined steeply in recent years. A University of Southampto­n tagging study, published in Proceeding­s of the National Academy of Sciences, reveals this is due to collisions with ships. Whale shark migration paths coincide with shipping lanes – as plankton feeders, the sharks often swim just below the surface, making them very vulnerable.
