IS NUCLEAR PRICE WORTH PAYING?
Proponents of nuclear energy often present it as an interim solution to the looming energy crisis, arguing that it can be made operational in a relatively short time and at a reasonable cost, providing thousands of jobs for British workers.
Anyone tempted to accept these claims should look at the experience of Finland. In 2005, the Finns began work on a new nuclear reactor – Olkiluoto 3. It is currently nine to 10 years behind schedule and three times over budget.
This is exactly the same kind of reactor (EPR – European Pressurised Reactor) that is planned for Hinkley Point C. There is every likelihood that the numerous, complex problems that the Finns have encountered will arise here.
As costs escalate, money earmarked for research and development of renewables could be diverted to Hinkley.
The price the Government is prepared to pay for Hinkley’s electricity is extortionate, particularly since the price of renewable energy will continue to fall and technology will be developed to manage the intermittent generation.
