FINDING TAWNY OWLS

-

• Anywhere with mature deciduous trees will probably have tawny owls. Quiet woodlands adjoining areas of open uncultivated countryside are particularly good. • Winter is a good time to listen and look for tawnies. Look for roosting birds hiding among ivy clumps in large trees. • On fine, still afternoons, tawnies often sit out in the sun in the entrance to their nest holes. • Accumulations of pellets, formed from undigested prey remains, reveal a tawny’s roosting spot. • Tawnies are declining, and one reason may be a shortage of nest-sites. Encourage a pair to move in to your garden by putting up a nestbox: www.barnowltrust.org.uk/ barn-owl-nestbox/tawny-owl-nestbox
