WHAT IS BEING DONE?
In 2006 an EU-wide ban made the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in the UK illegal.
In 2013, the Government began a five-year anti-microbial resistance strategy, emphasising the responsible use – and reduction in use – of those antibiotics of critical importance.
The UK poultry sector reduced antibiotic use by 43% from 2012 to 2015. But the NFU says reduction targets could do more damage than good by reducing dosages and thereby increasing resistance.
In 2016 the National Pig Association began collecting data on antibiotic use, extending education in disease control.
