ARE THERE ANTIBIOTICS IN OUR FOOD?
RUMA says a procedure of ‘withdrawal’ – the minimum length of time after treatment before an animal may go for slaughter or have its milk or eggs taken for human consumption – is observed in the UK. “Any antibiotics are utterly biodegraded before the meat or drink enters the food chain,” says RUMA’s FitzGerald. “There is no risk of consuming antibiotics from livestock. The risk is bacteria on any meat may become resistant to treatment by antibiotics.”
