Happy Christmas!
I tend to feel safe at Christmas, secure in the warmth it brings… assured by its familiarity, by the memories.” This by chef Gill Meller, page 64, struck a chord when I was thinking about what makes Christmas more than just a booze-and-buying fest with tinsel, TV and indigestion. No matter what upheaval we’ve experienced on a personal – or national – level, Christmas provides us with a moment to slow down and reflect in the company of loved ones. This special issue provides all the ingredients.
Which brings me back to Gill. Now he may like talking about the familiar, but his recipes for Christmas dinner offer a challenge to the traditional turkey, plus all the trimmings. Then we have inspiring church walks: crisp winter strolls that include some of our most delightful rural holy places; see page 75. I find Christmas indulgence less guilt-laden if I’ve got some miles under my belt as well as chocolate. And if you’re after a longer winter escape, you can’t beat the beauty and atmosphere of the North York Moors; page 18.
I did mention booze and it would be remiss not to include a Christmas spirit. We sent poor Mark Sutcliffe to Islay to sample the single malts on this blessed isle, and hopefully remember enough to furnish us with an article. I won’t say any more on the matter such is my envy; page 58.
I hope you enjoy this festive feast – and have a very Happy Christmas!
