THREE TOR WALKS

-

1 QUICK AND EASY Staple Tor

A Take the B3357 and stop in the car park 1.2km west of Merrivale (SX 535 752). Follow a path north-east to Little Staple Tor, on to Middle Staple, then up to the ‘avenue’ tor of Great Staple Tor itself. B You can either return by the same route, or head on to Roos Tor before turning back.

2 A LITTLE DEMANDING Littaford, Longaford and Higher White Tors

A From the car park at Two Bridges (SX 609 751), take the track north, leaving it just beyond the gate to climb the ridge to Littaford Tor. B Head on to Longaford Tor (and a possible clamber), then Higher White Tor. C Return towards Longaford, before heading downhill over rough ground to Wistman’s Wood. Work along the river side of the wood to find a footpath leading back.

3 TOUGH, BUT TOR-STREWN AND REWARDING Belstone Ridge horseshoe

A Parking at Belstone (SX 621 938), take the left fork at the village green to follow the road uphill to the moor. About 200m beyond the gate, bear right off the track to climb the hill, working through tumbled stones on the east side of the un-named tor. B Clamber through Belstone Tor (there’s a path of sorts), crossing Irishman’s Wall to pass Higher Tor just to the east. Follow the ridge path, eventually meeting a track that drops to the River Taw. C Follow the track south, finding a path that turns back to climb Steeperton Tor. D From Steeperton, follow a path just east of south, towards Wild Tor. E From Wild Tor, take a path north to Hound Tor, then drop downhill to the west to find a path that drops into the Taw Valley, crossing a ford to meet the track back.
