7 SIGNS YOUR DOG HAS SENSITIVE SKIN

-

1. Skin pigmentation

White or pale dogs tend to have fair skin underneath their fur, which means they are at a greater risk of potential sun damage, just like fair skinned people!

2. Itching and licking

If you notice your dog frequently scratching, or excessively biting and licking, then it is likely that they have sensitive skin. A cheeky itch now and then is perfectly normal, but look out for behaviour that is compulsive.

3. Rubbing on the furniture

If your dog is trying to treat their itch by brushing against furniture and other inanimate objects, sensitive skin may be the reason.

4. Long-standing dandruff

Dandruff could be a sign of sensitivity, especially if it seems more severe than your standard shedding of dead skin cells.

5. Excessive moulting

Most dogs shed hair, especially in hot weather, but if your dog is losing concerning amounts or the shedding is resulting in patchy bald patches, they may have sensitive skin.

6. Sore skin

Red and inflamed areas of skin, or what looks like a hive-type reaction, could be a sign of sensitive skin.

7. Malodourous skin/ears

If you are regularly and thoroughly washing your dog and their skin or ears are letting off an unpleasant aroma, this could signify some sensitivity.

If you have observed any of these behaviours, it is always best to contact your veterinary practice for advice.

Choosing a suitable diet

The right diet is so important for sensitive dogs, and even if they do not require any ingredient restrictions due to allergies, a diet that supports the skin, digestion and immune system can still be highly beneficial.
