MILES BETTER

Open the way to the countless benefits of walking regularly with the help of the Ramblers

-

For most of us, a walk in the countryside is something we take for granted. However, it’s sadly not a privilege everyone can always enjoy. Thankfully, by thoroughly researching routes, opening and maintaining paths across the country and offering sociable, welcoming weekly walking groups, the Ramblers has made walking in the great outdoors easier and more accessible for so many.

Projects like the England Coast Path have ensured more people than ever before can enjoy equal access to the countless mental and physical benefits that countryside walking can provide them with, no matter their age, location or background.

To raise awareness of these benefits, the Ramblers has joined forces with star of

Jimmy’s Farm, Jimmy Doherty, for the

Let’s Walk Together campaign. A keen advocate of exploring in the great outdoors, Jimmy says a walk in the countryside “puts you in perspective with nature, and also gives you room to breathe without all the clutter we’re faced with”. Here are just a few more ways that walking can benefit us all…

The World Health Organisation recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of physical exercise a week. It’s thought to be enough to help lessen your risk of developing illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Not only that, but research has shown that physically active people could have up to a 30% reduced risk of depression, and walking can be hugely beneficial in helping recovery.

Walking is also a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones, as you’re less likely to be interrupted, or distracted by messages on your phone. You can meet new people too, especially if you take part in a walk organised by the Ramblers.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t take yourself out for a solitary wander. Whether you need some time alone or want to get to know yourself better, there’s something empowering about making the time to do something you enjoy.
