FINDING THE DORDOGNE IN DORSET

-

Whether it’s the landscape or culture, some favourite European walking destinations have distinctive characteristics that can also be found in the British Isles. Inntravel’s self-guided walking holidays give you the freedom to walk at your own pace and explore at leisure while your luggage is transported from hotel to hotel. And there are some surprising similarities to be found between their UK-based and Europe-wide holidays.

GOZO & JERSEY

The first, obvious similarity here is both are small islands with dramatic coastlines and alluring interiors. Furthermore, both Gozo and Jersey feel exotic, yet familiar, as strong British connections complement rather than dominate the essential characteristic of each island. For walkers, the fascinating vestiges of the past in both, bestow landscapes imbued with a palpable sense of history.

ALICANTE & THE YORKSHIRE DALES

At first glance, the mountains of Alicante in Spain and England’s Yorkshire Dales have very little in common. However, they are both glorious landscapes fashioned from limestone. Inntravel’s walking holidays in these regions both yield big rewards for relatively little effort. And what the Yorkshire Dales lacks in dramatic ravines, it makes up for in impressive waterfalls.

DORDOGNE & DORSET

Spotting the similarity between Dorset and Tuscany or the Dordogne is not immediately obvious, but what they all have in common is a romantic image of the rural idyll. In Tuscany, think olive groves and vineyards; in the Dordogne it’s orchards and farmyards of geese, while in Dorset the ancient woodland, rolling hills and country lanes embody the romance of Thomas Hardy’s England.

ITALIAN APENNINES & WALES

Exploring the Apennines, the mountains forming Italy’s spine, may not feel anything like Wales…until you’re halfway up Pen-y-Fan, southern Britain’s tallest peak, in the Brecon Beacons. Additionally, both shine in autumn; the deciduous forests of the Apennines displaying an explosion of colour while the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal reflects a vibrant canopy of reds and golds.
