A tasty line-up

Star names on the bill as Soma Festival delivers tunes and fab food

Belfast Telegraph - Weekend - - TRAVEL -

The Soma Festival, which takes place in Castlewellan and the surrounding areas, from Wednesday until next Sunday, is bigger and better than ever, with special guests such as singer/songwriters, Lisa Hannigan, and Eddi Reader and double platinum selling artist Declan O Rourke set to take part.

Soma means ‘Food of the Gods’ and this year music is a core theme of the festival.

The Opening Concert on Wednesday stars Eddi Reader of Fairground Attraction fame and Donal Lunny, godfather of Irish tradition and founder of the Bothy Band, Planxty and Moving Hearts.

Soma also brings you a fantastic theatrical evening inspired by Ireland’s ‘Wine Geese’ on Friday. Susan Boyle has built up a great reputation for her amazing show, combining wine tasting and theatre. This hour-long one-woman performance at The Fountain Bar fuses interactive wine tasting with storytelling in a warm intimate setting. .

On the final day of the festival The Dublin Gospel Choir will be performing. Versatile, professional, passionate and vibrant they uplift and energise with powerful voices and rich harmonies whether they are performing STELLAR: as a small ensemble group or full, 40-piece choir. The programme has been extended to include a larger Body and Soul event, the Soma Taste Experience and also a number of workshops including creative writing, music and artwork; a new language school, guided walks to places of historical interest, and at Feile Spraoi big and little kids can enjoy story-telling, art and face painting. During Soma Body and Soul, you can experience well-being talks and activities such as The Sound Healing Spa, Sound Bath Relaxation Sessions, Yoga Drum Circle Laughter, and Yoga Meditation Thai Chi Stress.

The Soma Taste Experience celebrates Northern Ireland Year of Food and Drink 2016 by offering a variety of bespoke foods and local craft beers and live music over the festival.

Why not extend your stay? A wide range of excellent accommodation is available across the area ranging from luxurious hotels, to B&Bs and self-catering options. Check out discovernorthernireland.com.
