Winner of TV’s Great British Hairdresser on the hottest trends

Belfast Telegraph - Weekend - - FASHION/BEAUTY -

As party season gets into full swing, I’m focusing this week on some different looks that will take you from office to party in style. The key is that you can do these very simply yourself at home or at the office before you go out, in minimal time and with inexpensive products.

The main trends at the moment are for slickly pulled back hair or casual, messy styles. And the Nineties theme, which was prominent throughout autumn, is continuing right up until Christmas. We can take inspiration from Kendall Jenner who looks great with her hair in a messy updo — just scrape your hair back and fix in a crocodile grip. It’s really that simple.

Or look to J-Lo who rocks the slicked back look with aplomb. This look defines her and she does it perfectly. The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan, also carries this look off very well.

If you want to copy this look, put your hair in a low ponytail, and then if you wish to put it in a bun, twist it around and secure it with a few pins.

This style is all about the finish, so use a wet look gel to achieve that slick look. If you use hairspray or smoothing spray with this style it won’t look as slick. But with a wet look gel your style will look as good as the celebrities in the magazines.

Why not try your hair in a half bun? This is when you put the top half of your hair in a ponytail, wrap it around and fix with a few pins.

The rest of your hair will be hanging down, and keep it quite messy to be right on trend. Spritz some spray to enhance this messy look.

I have to say that I’m not a fan of the curly blowdry. It’s dated and, along with backcombing, it can make you look older.

Trying to get people out of their comfort zone can be difficult for hairdressers but I would suggest HEAD START: trying beach waves instead of a curly blowdry. This is a more modern and youthful look. Even something as simple as changing your parting can update your look, or go for a different blowdry. Most salons have a blowdry menu and you can choose one, or your stylist can recommend one. Another strong look at the moment is the flat ironed bob or midi-length hair. Kim Kardashian is the queen of this look and it’s great if you have thick, glossy hair. If you have finer hair, you need to go for texture and a great tip is to use dry shampoo. This is an excellent way to build volume into your roots — turn your head upside down and give the hair a good blast of dry shampoo. Also, the crimper is back and this is a great way to be expressive. It’s a great Nineties look and it’s quirky and fresh. Have a look at how Ariana Grande does it — she is often seen with a crimped, braided ponytail. After all, party time is the time to go for something different. You can go a bit crazy with your hair at this time of year. Experiment a little, try something different and you may well love it! ÷ Keris Weir, MG Hair Boutique, 153e Union Street, Lurgan, tel: 028 3832 5543
