Play waiting game before gambling on a fresh look

Winner of TV’s Great British Hairdresser on the hottest trends

Belfast Telegraph - Weekend - - CHRISTMAS FASHION/BEAUTY - KerisWeir

Chameleon celebrities use them to change their looks for the red carpet and it is little surprise that, this Christmas, clipin extensions are the key accessory for the party season.

Almost every star you can think of — from the Kardashians to Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez — have transformed their look with the simple addition of a clipin ponytail or additional locks for extra volume.

After working in London, where clip-ins were all the rage, I developed my own range when I came back to Northern Ireland.

The beauty is in the simplicity — they can give you an instant glamorous look and all you have to do is clip them in and out again at the end of the night.

They are popular all year round, but this Christmas they have been in huge demand.

Christmas is now upon us and in hairdressing the dawning of a new year is usually when people seek a new look.

Hair salon vouchers are popular stocking-fillers, but a word of caution — if you find one under the tree this Christmas morning, take your time deciding how you will use it.

Many people rush in and want to make an extreme change.

My advice is, if you are going to a new salon, ask for a consultation when you make your appointment.

It is very important to find out what style and colour will suit you best and also don’t be afraid to ask what it is going to cost.

Salons get a huge influx of voucher customers in January, and of course they have already got the cash for them, so make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your voucher.

The last thing you want is to get your new look and have to cough up more money before you leave the salon.

A lot of the new trends for next year will not be unveiled until January, or even February, so while you might have the urge to rush out over Christmas and transform your look, my advice would be to sit tight and wait.

A lot of people jump in with vouchers and they can be wasted if you aren’t entirely sure what you want.

Check when your voucher expires and if you can wait at least until mid-January.

January is also a time when there are lots of bargains to be had in hairdressing.

Salons can be quiet after the Christmas rush and many will have cut-price promotions on.

The price of hair products and accessories, such as straighteners and curlers, also plunges after Christmas.

If you shop around, you can maybe get double the service for your money.
