Shankill lights up in popular Christmas parade

- BY DAVID YOUNG

THE Shankill Road sparkled as thousands turned out to take part in this year’s Light Up The Road lantern parade.

Funnyman Tim McGarry did the honours at the Shankill Christmas lights switch-on — the climax of the gala event — on Friday night.

Two lantern parades — one from Woodvale and the other from Townsend Street — lit up the road as they made their way to the Mid-Shankill Community Garden and its Christmas tree.

It was the second year the ‘Light Up The Road’ parade had been staged.

Among the musical acts entertaining the festive crowds were Belfast Ukulele Jam, Alive Choir, Belfast Guitar Orchestra and Holly McCoubrey.

DUP councillor Brian Kingston, a former Lord Mayor of Belfast, praised the wonderful atmosphere, and the “fantastic community spirit” on display.
