bench at Windsor Park in 2005 when David Healy struck the famous winner for Northern Ireland against England who had Gerrard, David Beckham and Frank Lampard in a star-studded midfield.

Four months later, Robinson scored a cracker for Luton in a memorable 5-3 FA Cup defeat at home to Liverpool, captained by Gerrard.

“As a player, Steven Gerrard was world class. He was one of my heroes. I was lucky enough to play against him twice and I got his shirt once,” recalled Robinson.

“He achieved some great things at Liverpool and I think everyone is fascinated to see how he will do in his first big managerial role.”

Many feel that Gerrard needs to have a complete overhaul of the Rangers squad to have a chance of competing for honours in the future.

Robinson knows all about that process from his time in the Motherwell hotseat.

“When I took over in March last year, we stayed up on the second last game of the season,” said the highly respected Fir Park boss.

“There was a huge transformation in the summer with players and coaching staff. Seventeen players came in and out. Thankfully we hit the ground running. The players who bought into what we wanted to do deserve great credit for that.”
