How they rated
BRUCE HOUSTON: He had to make way when McBurney was binned and rarely got the ball going forward. A few wobbles.
IWAN HUGHES: Made one neat burst in the first half but his opposite number was a handful all evening. 5 STEWART MOORE: Showed his siege gun boot on one occasion and got involved whenever he could, showing his great strength.
JAMES HUME: Took on the mantle of being the backline’s focal point but spent a lot of time having to defend. 6 ANGUS KERNOHAN: Hardly got many touches on an awful night for wingers and was mostly deployed defensively. JOHNNY McPHILLIPS: Kicked all three conversions but would have wanted to be more prominent in the game. 6 JONNY STEWART: There were some neat touches but he then shipped a heavy knock and was gone just after half an hour. 5 SCHALK VAN DER MERWE: A rare sighting, he had the upper hand in the scrums and did some decent carrying as well. 6 ADAM McBURNEY: Got the first two tries off mauls but then the skipper was yellow-carded. Did okay after that. 6 TOM O’TOOLE: Scrummed well and put in his usual high work rate and kept it all going until virtually the end. 7 MATTHEW REA: First game back since his ban and had to play lock. A reasonable shift too, full of aggression.
ALEX THOMPSON: Took some useful lineout ball and he also put in a decent night’s work at the coalface.
JOE DUNLEAVY: Worked hard but only got 40 minutes. Won a turnover but put a ball out on the full. 5 MARCUS REA: The hard-working flanker was rewarded with Ulster’s third try of the evening when he smashed through fromamaul.
GREG JONES: The main focus at the lineout, the Dubliner kept himself going as a hard-grafting ball-carrier. 6
Graham Curtis: (for Stewart 32mins) Zack McCall: (for Houston 34-44mins and for McBurney 72mins) 5 David McCann: (for Dunleavy half-time)
5 Peter Cooper:
