Traders fear increase in smuggling
BUSINESSES have expressed concern over an expected surge in cross-border smuggling after Brexit.
Benny Gilsenan of Retailers Against Smuggling (RAS) called for “greater consideration” of the impact of the problem in the event of the UK leaving the European Union without a deal.
“Retailers are genuinely concerned about the impact Brexit, fluctuating currency and the possibility of trade tariffs will have on smuggling along the border,” he said.
“Extra resources and protections are needed for small legitimate retailers who operate along the border to ensure there is no increase in smuggled goods entering Ireland, especially in the event of a no-deal Brexit.”
A survey by RAS last year found that illicit cigarette and fuel trade were among retailers’ biggest concerns.
