With 5-HTP

-

5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, sounds like a robot, but is actually another natural way to increase feel-good chemicals. It’s a compound that our body makes itself from a particular amino acid, which is then converted to neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and GABA, all of which play an important role in depression and insomnia. “In the brain, 5-hydroxytryptophan is the precursor to serotonin, which is associated with many mental health disorders,” explains Julie. “Therefore, many people find that taking supplements containing 5-HTP can reduce anxiety.”

Again, it helps if you struggle to drop off at night, too. “As serotonin can be converted to melatonin, the hormone secreted at dusk, it can help with sleep problems,” says Julie. A study found that 200mg of 5-HTP significantly lowered the panic rate and intensity of symptoms of panic among women. nervous system and has been found to suit mild to moderate depression, where it can allay anxiety while lifting the spirits. It is well suited to problems in association with the menopause and/or digestive issues, too.”

But be patient. “Results may not show for a few weeks, so persist,” says Dr Charles, who also warns that it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so be sure to use SPF50. And it shouldn’t be used if you take antidepressants, immunosuppressants, antiretrovirals, or warfarin – so check with your GP first.
