doctor before trying any. Dr Charles explains, “These remedies are for complementing ‘normal’ medical support, rather than replacing it.”

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active ingredient in the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant, so it doesn’t make you high. Several studies have found it eases anxiety and improves sleep. In one piece of research, scientists gave either CBD oil or a placebo to people with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder before asking them to complete a public speaking test. They tested them all for signs of anxiety, like higher blood pressure and increased heart rate, and those who had received CBD were far less anxious. CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which controls mood, memory, stress, sleep, behaviour and pain. It also binds to receptors in the brain including one responsible for the feel-good brain chemical serotonin.

“CBD will not make you sleepy, it can however help with sleep problems by reducing stress,” says Julie. “It has also been shown to improve mood, especially if supported by essential oils like limonene. I use CBD during times of higher-than-usual stress.” proven that patients taking valerian had an 80 per cent greater chance of improved sleep compared with patients taking a placebo. It’s fairly inexpensive and doesn’t come with side-effects like grogginess, unlike some other sleep aids. “Valerian increases levels of GABA and has been especially researched for solving sleep problems. It can help keep people asleep for longer and doesn’t cause any drowsiness the next day. My favourite is Bonuit, which contains both passionflower and valerian.”

“It’s particularly good if there is associated stress-related digestive upset,” add Dr Charles. “But be aware some people experience a paradoxical reaction with valerian, whereby it enlivens rather than calms.” sedatives,” adds Dr Charles.
