HOW TO HELP

-

“Having regular eye exams and keeping your glasses prescription updated is very important,” says David. “Adding a protective coating designed to attenuate the high energy visible blue light emitted from mobile devices will reduce digital eye strain and help maintain circadian rhythm.

“Remember the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will help relax your eyes. Our blink rate slows when we’re using computers and mobile devices, which can result in dry eyes and a gritty sensation, so remember to blink frequently.”

“You can also try some eye yoga,” advises Dr Hepworth. “Look to the left, hold the position, repeat looking right. Look up, hold the position, repeat looking down. Repeat four times, closing your eyes and relaxing in between.”

Diet and lifestyle changes can be beneficial, too. “A diet rich in fruits and vegetables – particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale – can support your eye health,” says Dr Hepworth. “Your eyes also benefit from the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, seaweed and certain seeds.”

Finally, something as simple as switching out your cosmetic products can help to save your sight. “Mascara, eyeliner and eye shadow should be replaced every three months to keep it as hygienic as possible and to reduce the chances of bacteria transferring to your eye and causing an infection,” warns Dr Hepworth. “You should also take extra care when applying mascara. A mascara brush in the eye can scratch your cornea, which could need medical attention.”
