Meghan’s U-turn

-

Meghan Markle has made a “brave request” to King Charles III, asking for a face-to-face meeting in a letter. The Duchess of Sussex, 41, made the move for a private conversation with the new monarch before she and husband Prince Harry flew back to the US after reuniting with the royals at the Queen’s funeral last week, according to reports. “She’d now like, before they return back to California, to have a one-to-one audience with King Charles III,” said royal reporter Neil Sean. “It would be an opportunity to clear the air, pull the rights from wrongs and explain some of the rationale behind what they’ve been doing over the last two years. Truthfully, we have no idea if this is going to go forward.”

Meghan’s move comes after new ruler Charles attempted to unite his fractured family by expressing love for his youngest son and his wife, despite them no longer being working royals. “I want to also express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas,” he said in his first address as monarch. Meeting the King signals a major U-turn for the Sussexes who, after stepping away from being frontline royals in 2020, have criticised the royal family in media interviews over the past two years. While reports of the letter were disputed, royal insider Duncan Larcombe says such an olive branch would be a commendable move on Meghan’s part.

“This would be the right step in mending the family rift and whether this is a temporary ceasefire or a genuine truce, I hope she realises the magnitude of the gesture the King made in his speech,” he explains. “As Charles promoted his eldest son into the family business, he didn’t neglect his other son, despite him not working with them. I hope she has written a long letter to him with numerous apologies because despite how they have behaved, Charles is clearly willing to forgive and move on. I hope Meghan affords him the same level of dignity and maturity.”
