What’s up with boozy Danny? Sudden EastEnders exit

Fears grow for EastEnders star Danny Dyer after he flees to South Africa – alone!

- WORDS: LYNN CARRATT

He’s the loveable rogue hailed as the saviour of

EastEnders since joining as landlord Mick Carter in 2013. But Danny is taking a break from the soap, to fans’ dismay, and has fled alone to South Africa amid rumours of ‘exhaustion’, ‘drinking too much’ and ‘needing to control his temper’.

Danny’s shock exit follows rumours of him being told to ‘clean up his act’ after angering bosses with wild behaviour. The sudden intervention came after the 39-year-old went on a series of drinking binges, despite vowing to give up the booze this year. Danny’s mum, Christina, has revealed she told Alan Carr ahead of her son’s appearance on the Chatty Man’s New Year’s Eve show to ‘not get my son drunk tonight – you have been warned’.

The final straw is believed to have come at January’s National Television Awards, when it’s alleged Danny had a boozy meltdown and had to be calmed down by co-stars Laurie Brett [Jane Beale] and James Bye [Martin Fowler].

An insider claimed, ‘Danny’s behaviour has been out of control for months: He could be nice one minute, and the next he’d be ranting and raving and winding up established cast members, including Adam Woodyatt [who plays Ian Beale] and Letitia Dean [Sharon Mitchell].’ It’s also rumoured he came to blows with co-star Steve McFadden [Phil Mitchell] prior to his exit.

BBC bosses have said, ‘Danny is on a short break from EastEnders. This was not enforced by bosses, nor has he quit the show. He has never walked off set, nor has he ever lost his temper or been rude to anyone at work. Danny is an extremely popular member of cast and respected by everyone on the show.’

Danny’s eldest daughter Dani, 20, has also hit out at the rumours, calling them lies.

And, speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain last week, former co-star Ross Kemp told host Piers Morgan, ‘I have a sympathy for anyone who is in that job, obviously, and dealing with the pressures of it.’

But Danny’s wife Jo, whom he married six months ago, has stayed unusually quiet, barely tweeting since the day of the NTAs, and did not accompany him on the flight he’s said to have taken to Cape Town last week. It’s thought he is planning to stay there, and out of the limelight, for around a month. According to a source, ‘He’s in contact with the family, and Jo may join him later.’

We hope that you feel better soon, Danny!
