Carol McGiffin: The Way I See It

THEWAY I SEE IT... Wise words from our feisty, fearless and funny columnist

- CAROL McGIFFIN

‘As much as I’m not a fan, I found it rather refreshing that Cheryl Cole didn’t ‘announce’ her pregnancy the minute she found out, a decision for which she got a barrage of indignant stick. Why?

Because we live in an age of celebrity oversharing, where celebrities tell us everything, even things we don’t want to know, so when they choose not to tell us something, all hell breaks loose.

That doesn’t happen often, though, because mostly they spout personal information without good reason.

Take Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry, for example, who wasted no time announcing they’d gone their separate ways. Or rather they were taking ‘respectful and loving space’ to prevent the ‘rumours and falsifications’ getting out of hand. What rumours? I didn’t hear any, did you? But still, at least we know, so that’s good.

It’s just par for the course these days. ‘Oops, I’ve farted’ – put it on Twitter. ‘Oh dear, I’ve run my own dog over’ – quick, put a pic on Instagram.

Where will it all end? How long before celebs are sharing a ‘ live feed’ of their morning routine and ablutions?

It’s like an illness. An epidemic. I’m guilty of it, too. Mainly because I write this column and sometimes it’s about me, and I have been known, on occasion, to share stuff after a few drinks, but I’m working on that, as I usually regret it in the morning!

Someone, please make it stop.’
