Carol’s moving tribute to her mum

Heartbreak for Carol Vorderman as she loses her rock – her beloved mum

- WORDS: DEIRDRE O’BRIEN

It was the day TV’s Carol Vorderman had been dreading above all others – the funeral of her mother, Jean, who has passed away, aged 88, following a battle

with cancer. Carol took to Twitter last week to announce the sad news, saying, ‘Some days are tough – today was one of them. Today was my amazing Mum’s funeral.’

Poignantly, she added, ‘Rest in peace, Jean Vorderman. You will always be loved.’

She also posted a sweet poem she wrote when she was four: ‘ I have a little mummy, she is so sweet and dear, I will not leave her until the streets are gone… ’

Jean had battled cancer three times over the past 12 years but, this time, there was nothing to be done.

In March this year, Carol tweeted the sad news, ‘A precious Mother’s Day. This week, Mum and I found out she has terminal cancer. She’s 88, beautiful inside and out, and I love her beyond measure.’

Carol, 56, had been incredibly close to Jean and had previously said, ‘My mum and I have always lived together, and that’s the way we like it. She has been there through it all, no matter what.’

After Jean’s diagnosis, Carol withdrew from the public eye to spend some precious last days with her mum. And, although the time was filled with sadness, the devoted pair made the most of it. Brave Jean said she wanted to ‘celebrate’ the time she had left with her loved ones.

Carol said, ‘ We are laughing so much. Mum refuses to let us be sad, so we are taking our lead from her.’

But her loss will be a terrible blow for Carol, who recently revealed that depression – linked to the menopause – had left her so low that she’d considered suicide. She revealed, ‘The only reason I didn’t do something was because I have two children.’

Hopefully, Carol’s kids – Cameron, 20, and Katie, 24 – will be able to provide the single TV star with some much-needed comfort as she comes to terms with her heartbreaking loss.
