Having spent eight years interviewing the sometimes weird and wacky on the This
Morning sofa, you might have thought Holly Willoughby had heard it all. But a recent guest left her reeling.
It happened when Arran Lee Squire appeared on the show recently with his wife, Hannah Nguyen, and his incredibly lifelike ‘sex robot’, which he’s named Samantha.
Not only does Arran – who runs the company that markets the robots – make love to Samantha, but he and Hannah have ‘threesomes’ with the doll. He even allows it to lounge around the family home with his children, aged three and five.
Arran, who also explained that he is looking into ways to heat Samantha up so it’s no longer cold to the touch (Phil described it as ‘ like a corpse’), tried to convince Holly of Samantha’s charms, asking, ‘ Would you agree, she’s very beautiful?’
Holly exclaimed, ‘No! She’s a doll. You can’t get away from the fact that she’s not real!’
She looked further taken aback as Arran described how Samantha – which is also programmed to make crude sexual outbursts and sensual moans – has a ‘family mode’, and can talk about science, animals and even tell jokes.
But Holly wasn’t convinced that having Samantha as ‘part of the family’, as Hannah described her, was a good thing, pointing out the possible concerns that the children might have.
‘At some point, they’re going to go, “I’m now old enough to realise that daddy has sex with Samantha and Samantha’s not mummy,”’ said Holly. ‘Isn’t that a bit strange?’
‘I think the world is changing,’ replied Arran.
But Holly went on, ‘ Women have vibrators, that’s now accepted as part of our society, and they fit in the drawer. But where are you going to hide that? It could be quite frightening if a child found it in their wardrobe.’
And the TV host wasn’t alone in her reservations, as viewers took to Twitter to voice their concerns.
‘FAMILY MODE?! Oh God no!!’ wrote one, while another added, ‘His poor kids will be traumatised when they’re older that they’ve played with their parents’ sex doll.’
But despite her misgivings, Holly was professional to the end, finishing with, ‘Samantha, nice to meet you… I guess.’
