Jonathan’s heartache

Irish heart-throb Jonathan Rhys Meyers seems to be struggling to cope after his devastating loss…

- WORDS: SHELLEY MARSDEN

Arecovering alcoholic, actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers has had some serious ups and downs over the years – including a bad relapse in 2015, when he was seen alone on a street in London, swigging from a bottle of vodka.

The Dublin-born star, who is based in Los Angeles, has previously said of his addiction, ‘ When I drink, I’m like Bambi. I’m all over the place, like a 16-year-old kid.’

And, sadly, the troubled star is clearly struggling again, after his actress wife, Mara Lane, revealed last week she had suffered a miscarriage. She also shared video footage of a doctor telling the couple, ‘Unfortunately, the foetus has no heartbeat.’

The Tudors actor, 40, was subsequently pictured staggering around Dublin Airport, and being cared for by passing police.

The lost baby would have been the couple’s second child – they have a son, Wolf, born last December.

In a heartbreaking Instagram message, Mara confessed that Jonathan ‘wasn’t taking the news so well’, before she went on to thank fans for their outpouring of support.

Beside an image of a setting sun with light breaking through some trees, she penned a post including the words, ‘I got teary-eyed several times at how beautiful humans can be… Thank you… this helps us feel that we are not alone.’

Explaining her husband’s condition, she added, ‘Depression from past abuse is a real concern, as well as the alcoholism that he was born with. He has been able to turn any ugliness and hurt in his life into art, and is the strongest person I know.

‘I don’t know anyone who has been through what he has been through and reached his level of success. It seems that every time we appear to be making so much progress… it’s like two steps forward, one step back.’

Mara also revealed the final resting place of their baby, saying, ‘Baby Willow is now buried under the tree in front of our home, which has weeping long branches and leaves so we can see the baby dance with the wind in the branches as they sway.’

Here’s hoping Jonathan gets the help he clearly needs, and his family starts to slowly heal after their sad loss.
