How can I give my pal’s creepy partner the cold shoulder?

Icategorically cannot stand my friend’s new partner, but I can’t really explain why. It’s nothing he’s specifically done, apart from the odd comment; I just get a horrible feeling whenever he’s around. I’m turning 50 next month and plan to throw a dinner party at my house. Everyone will be bringing their partners, but I just don’t want this man in my house! How on earth do I explain to my friend I don’t want him there?

There is no easy way. All you can do is play it down a bit and say you just don’t gel with him. She won’t be happy, but it is your house, your big 5-0 and you have the right to say who’s invited. Your friend may decide not to attend as a result, but better that than to have an uncomfortable atmosphere on your big night.
