Den’s Xmas fury

Denise Welch shocked viewers with her live on-air tirade

- WORDS: SHELLEY SPADONI

‘Stop talking about the C-word until December. My children are not allowed to mention it’

Granted, she’s never been a wallflower – but even we were shocked at Denise Welch’s angry rant on ITV’s Loose Women recently!

For many, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. But as the panel discussed the festive season – and those who plan early for it – Denise, 60, totally lost her cool, going on a long rant that slammed the places and people who start getting their Christmas spirit on early.

‘Do you know what it is? I am a real old humbug. It’s not so much the day, it’s the build-up from now for one bleeping, bleeping day, right?’ she began.

‘I went into a big shop in London last year. And it was on 22 October. And I remember this day. I just remember it. I said to the [sales assistant], “I’ve been in the shop for 20 minutes and I am beside myself with stress because of these Christmas songs, and there are two months to go. And you’ve got to work here.” And she said, “How would you feel if I told you this had started on 22 September?’”

The Loose Woman, who has again been a regular face on the daytime show following a five-year hiatus, went on, ‘I did tweet about this the other day, and I was sat at the airport, tired and grumpy in the morning, flying back.

‘I was really grumpy. And there was an advert to make the perfect Christmas dinner, and it’s like, do you know something – make a Sunday dinner like some people do every week, and don’t make the Yorkshire pudding! That’s your Christmas dinner! You don’t need to spend millions of pounds on adverts!’

Our best columnist, Carol McGiffin, 58 – on the panel with her pal for the first time in five years – nodded, clearly amused, confessing it was far from the first time she’d heard her pal’s rant on this topic.

‘ We’ve been away a while,’ she said. ‘ When it comes to this rant, nothing has changed! Not a word of it. It’s exactly the same, and I’ve heard it about 3,000 times.’

But our Denise hadn’t quite finished yet. Oh, no.

‘ You go into a shop to buy a present, and people go, “Have you started early?” No, saddo! I’m buying a birthday present for someone!’ she blasted. ‘Stop talking about the C-word until December. My children are not allowed to mention it.’

Personally, we can’t wait for all the shopping, carols and mulled wine. Stop being such a Christmas Grinch, Denise, would you?
