Making your own wreath is easier than you think. Lifestyle editor Lara Nugent went to Squire’s Garden Centre to learn how to create a DIY showstopper for your front door this Christmas.

WHAT YOU NEED

Noble fir ring Large bow in the colour of your choice Selection of decorations, such as pine cones, cinnamon sticks and berries Florist wire Oasis floral tape Any ready-made wreath will work for your base. If you want long-lasting, something you can’t go wrong with a noble fir. It’ll look impressive, smell fabulous and won’t shed many needles. You need to make all your decorations sturdy enough to secure on your wreath. Take a length of florist wire and create a loop, twist the ends around each other and cover in floral tape. Wrap the loop over your decoration, and then twist into place. Repeat this process until all your decorations have a wire pick to stick into your wreath. Before you secure your decorations, position them on top of your wreath base. You’ll then be able to see how your finished wreath will look. It’s a good idea to place your bow at the top, as this will create a focal point. When happy with the position, remove the decorations and put them around the outside of the wreath. You can then start securing them in place. To do this, push your fingers through the wreath base and then, gently stick your decoration in the hole. Twist the wire and tuck into the back of your wreath. Make sure they are neatly placed at the back of the wreath, as you don’t want the wire to scratch your door. Squire’s Garden Centres are running wreath and candle centrepiece masterclasses until 7 December. Tickets are £25 per person, and includes all the materials to make your wreath or centrepiece, a voucher for free tea or coffee, plus 10 percent off all plants purchased on the day.
