Meghan, the baby and the Queen’s crackdown

Harry may have said, ‘What Meghan wants, Meghan gets’, but Her Majesty has other ideas...

‘The feeling is that it’s good to have the Sussexes under the jurisdiction of the Palace’

As Harry and Meghan are about to find out, nothing alters life more than a newborn. Yet, the arrival of baby Sussex is just one of the major changes for the couple, as they move into their new home and establish their own court.

However, according to reports, when it came to making their bid for independence, Harry and Meghan have had their wings clipped by the Queen.

It’s been known for months that the newlyweds are moving out of Kensington Palace – away from Kate and William – to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor. To coincide with the move, they’re establishing their own household, rather than sharing Kate and William’s team.

However, their new communications team , headed up by Sara Latham, who worked on Hillary Clinton’s ill-fated presidential campaign, will form part of the Buckingham Palace communications team and report to the Queen’s communications secretary.

So, while their court will be separate from the Cambridges, it will not be independent of ‘The Firm’. It’s a move which is said to have disappointed Harry and Meghan.

A source told a newspaper, ‘They wanted their household to be entirely independent of Buckingham Palace, but were told “no”. The feeling is that it’s good to have the Sussexes under the jurisdiction of Buckingham Palace, so they can’t just go off and do their own thing.’

And if reports are to be believed, it is not the first time the Queen has stepped in to lay down the law with Harry. In the run-up to the wedding, she is said to have reminded him that she’d have the final say over which tiara Meghan would wear. Her Majesty is also rumoured to have warned the touchy-feely twosome to lay off the public displays of affection, too.

And with the swirl of bad publicity that has surrounded the couple, it is no wonder that the Queen wants a close eye kept on them. There is, of course, the ongoing saga of Meghan’s family, but Harry has also attracted criticism for the tone of his speech at climate change convention WE Day – and for heading there in a private helicopter.

Still, we’re quite sure that once the public get the first glimpse of baby Sussex, any bad publicity will be drowned out by the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’...
