BEHIND THE SCENES WITH best ‘Victoria’ s got no filter, which makes her so much fun ...’

-

Jenna Coleman, 32, was born in Blackpool. After roles in

Emmerdale and DrWho, she joined Victoria, where she met costar and real-life love Tom Hughes.

Where do we find Victoria in series three?

She is expecting child number six on the eve of the French Revolution at the start of the series. There is a definite sense that time has passed as the children are older, Victoria is wiser and her relationship with Albert is in a different place. The King of France turns up on her doorstep in rags, having been overthrown, so she questions whether this could happen to her.

What do you love most about playing Victoria?

I love her lack of filter, her frankness and honesty. If she likes someone she is incredibly loyal and if she doesn’t, she will let that person know. When she is in a bad mood or is tired, she gives in to it. They used to write about her having a ‘combustible’, which I love. She would feel mortified afterwards and would cry and apologise to Albert, but she pingpongs through emotions rapidly. As she gets older, she becomes even less controlled, so it is fun to age with her.

What’s it like, working with so many children?

It is utterly amazing, completely chaotic mayhem. Kids really do say the funniest things, and it’s the unpredictably on set which is

hilarious, especially when you throw in a few dogs, horses and a couple of politicians. I can’t imagine the palace now not inhabited by hordes of children.

And didn’t you have some unusual costumes to contend with?

Yes! In one scene, Victoria takes a dip in the water while wearing her bathing suit, which is a lot like pyjamas that are made from hemp. It was absolutely freezing and we had to film this twice because the weather was so awful. The Queen is meant to be taking a leisurely dip, but the waves were making it seem treacherous. l Victoria is on ITV on Sundays at 9pm.
