Holly torn in two: The decision that’s going to break her heart

Holly Willoughby has opened up on the devastating scenario none of us wants to face…

-

With the government recently unveiling the ‘rule of six’ – banning social gatherings of any more than six people, both indoors and outdoors in England, amidst the country’s steep rise in Coronavirus cases – many questioned how it would affect them personally, particularly with the festive season on the horizon.

And one of those pondering just what exactly this would mean for them, was This Morning host Holly Willoughby, 39.

Recently on the morning show, the concerned-looking presenter questioned out loud just how it meant Christmas Day might pan out for the Willoughby family.

Asked whether she was going to have to choose between her mother, Lynne, or her father, Terry, this Christmas – due to having a family of five – the realisation of the conundrum seemed to dawn on the mum-of-three, as she did the mental maths.

Expressing her fears for the festive season, Holly said; ‘This is very awkward for me, I’m in a family of five – so am I going to have to choose between my mum and dad on Christmas? … I guess the other thought is, how is anyone going to police these rules?’

Under the current restrictions, Holly, hubby Dan and their children – Harry, 11, Belle, nine, and Chester, five – would indeed have to choose between seeing Holly’s mother or her father. And that’s before they even think about Dan’s parents.

It’s a scenario that families across Britain will be fretting about in equal measure.

Appearing via video-link, guest Matthew Wright pitched in, ‘I’m feeling very confused and conflicted. The rules are different everywhere in the United Kingdom… You can’t have your parents over on Christmas Day but you can go on public transport? For the life of me, I can’t make sense of it.’

The Prime Minister himself even admitted it was a painful step he really didn’t want to take, explaining as he announced the measures at Westminster, ‘I am sorry about this, and I wish we did not have to do it.’

Who knows what will happen by the time Christmas is upon us? One thing is for sure, though – we could really do with that Christmas miracle.

If families are unable to see many of their loved ones after such a terribly difficult year, to quote the immortal words of Band Aid, ‘ Will they know it’s Christmas time at all?’

‘This is very awkward for me, because I’m in a family of five’
