IS YOUR BUNNY ON PERMANENT LOCKDOWN?

-

Our third most popular pet in the UK is often misunderstood. Here’s how to make sure your rabbit is healthy and happy…

According to PDSA vet Anna Ewer Clarke, being kept in housing that is too small, with no company and being fed incorrect diets is tantamount to rabbits being kept in permanent lockdown – and we know that isn’t much fun! Follow Anna’s simple steps and your rabbit will be living its best life in no time.

Rabbits are social pets and need the company of other rabbits. If you only have one, it is important to get them a friend. Visit the PDSA website to find out how to do this safely.

Make sure they have access to good quality hay or grass – they actually need their own body size in hay every day! This is an important source of fibre and also helps to wear down their teeth.

They also need a handful of fresh greens, morning and evening, and a single tablespoon of rabbit nuggets daily.

Bunnies need a nice big hutch – it should be high enough for them to stand on their hind legs without their ears touching the top, and long enough for three full hops. They also need a run, with access to grass and plenty of enrichment activities.

Protect from diseases like Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease with regular vaccinations.

Chewing and digging are natural behaviours, so encouraging this with toys will quickly improve their wellbeing.
