1973 1976 BMW R90S
Iconic machine shook up BMW’S beardy image and invented the sports touring segment. With a bikini fairing styled by Hans Muth, the R90S was also the first BMW to feature twin front brake discs. 898cc – 67bhp – 215kg – £7000-£10,000
1977 1984 BMW R100RS
The first production BMW to feature a full fairing. Despite its big, boxy bodywork the R100RS’S styling was reputedly honed in a windtunnel. Made 100mph cruising on the autobahn effortless. 980cc – 70bhp – 229kg – £2000-£5000
1980 1987 BMW R80 G/S
R80 G/S was the bike that created the adventure bike trend and even took a few Dakar wins. It was lightweight, featured a huge fuel tank, and a futuristic-looking monolever swingarm. 797cc – 37bhp – 191kg– £5000-£16,500
1991 1996 BMW R100R
The last of the airheads was BMW’S first retro roadster. With a paralever rear and Showa front forks, they’re regarded as the best handling of all the airheads, plus had the best reliability. 980cc – 60bhp – 215kg – £2000-£5000
