Dan Hegarty, 1986‘2017

I didn’t know Dan Hegarty but when I heard about his death at Macau I was shocked. It’s so sad, and is even more tragic because he had a young family too. It’s the horrid dark side of our sport that never gets any easier to cope with. The road race boys absolutely love what they do, and I suppose that’s what we have to focus on. But could Macau be safer? Of course it could. It’s a car racing road circuit and the bikes always seem to be an afterthought – there’s no Recticel air-fencing anywhere round the circuit. My thoughts and sympathy go to Dan’s family and friends.
