HOW TO SPOT ONE
Four single-minded pleasures…
2008 KTM 690 Duke
The first 690 replaces nine-year-old 625cc Duke II as the ‘streetmoto’ character in new 690 line-up. Free-flowing airbox and exhaust make highest power of the family, chassis is tall and slender. 654cc – 149kg dry – 62bhp – £3500-£4500
2010 KTM 690 Duke R
36cc more space than the standard Duke due to a 4.5mm longer stroke. A higher 12.5:1 compression ratio, too, and stiffer springs and less damping in the fork. Punchy power delivery stops at 7700rpm. 690cc – 148kg dry – 65bhp – £4500-£5500
2012 KTM 690 Duke
Slightly more sensible Duke. Switchable Bosch ABS, a wider and 30mm lower perch, softer ride-by-wire response. Front four-piston caliper by Brembo, and a new exhaust position due to lower seat. 690cc – 150kg dry – 65bhp – £4000-£6500
2016 KTM 690 Duke
Over 55% new components go into an engine with 3mm wider bore but shorter stroke to retain 690cc. Second balancer shaft gives a fabulously smooth ride despite the power increases. 690cc – 150kg dry – 70bhp – £5500-£7800
