Carrying injuries into the season

-

The knee injury will always be something that’s with me. It was such a big accident [he was hit by another bike in a World Endurance race and its fork leg went through the back of his right knee…] but it doesn’t really limit me. I can’t run as much as I used to and I have to have regular massages but I can still cycle, play tennis and even ski. I’ve just got to be careful and keep doing rehab. The finger injury [he trapped it under the bar during a crash at Catalunya last year and tore the flesh from it] doesn’t look pretty – one finger comes off at 90-degree angle – but it makes me feel like a bike racer. I’m part of the group. We start testing on 28 January and we’re rolling until 26 November with no more than three consecutive weekends off, so you just have to keep going with injuries. I don’t really think about it any more – if you look at most riders’ results with injuries you can see they can ride around issues. With most minor bone breaks the doctors say take 4’6 weeks off and you immediately think, ‘oh ok, I’ll be back in two’.
