BIKE (UK)

Barry Sheene loved it

-

‘Barry Sheene loved the Goodwood Revival and regularly won there. Before he died in 2003, and when he wrote a column for Bike, he told me that at the pre-race briefing the riders would agree to keep it tight till the last few laps, so as to put on a good show for the spectators, and then it was every man for himself. Once a racer, always a racer. ‘The reason that a fancy dress party in Sussex has turned into one of the must-do motorsport events isn’t the period setting, the classic bikes or the bizarre costumes worn by spectators, it’s because the racing is so good. ‘Current and former stars such as Troy Corser, Bruce Anstey, Freddie Spencer, the Dunlop brothers and our own James Haydon don’t hold back because they’re racing old bikes. They really go for it. These days the bike race is named in Barry’s honour.’ Hugo Wilson

Go by bike: You can cut through the annual traffic chaos and park up close to the spectator entrance. Make an effort: There is only one bike race each day, so viewing options are limited. Make the effort to watch at Lavant Corner. Go back to the paddock after the race to watch the rebuilds in progress.
