Beach balls

- Jonathan Pearson

‘Forget all that organized grid nonsense with lights and flags. If you’re yet to witness a mass start at a motorcycle race you haven’t lived. Weston Beach Race starts when the brave-asyou-like stewards hoik back wire fencing and unleash 700 bikes into a three hour race. ‘When this many riders throw themselves at sand dunes, at plus motorway speed limits, down a mile long straight you are definitely best off standing behind the fencing (but still within splashing distance please). ‘Either pitch yourself at the town end and watch the insanity as the gates are drawn back, or find a spot anywhere along the straight to watch the mass of speed, noise and feel that salty spray.’

Make the most of Weston: Wear wellies and wrap-up warm, but chiefly get yourself to the biggest dune of all (you can’t miss it) and enjoy the carnage.
