nd ’The pits at Dirtquake have to be the most down-to-earth in motorsport, with competitors and machinery crammed into a row of stalls round the edge of a tiny crescent of tarmac – it’s better suited to a village cattle market than a motorcycle event. Spectators are allowed in the pits, so that’s where we all go, creating a cheery, excitable mayhem, with racers pushing their bikes through the crowds to get to the speedway track. I’m standing in the middle of it all, soaking it up, loving every minute, when a northern voice tells me to, “mind yer back”. I turn while squeezing out the way. “Thanks mate,” says the northerner – four times WSB champion Carl Fogarty. God I love Dirtquake.’
