THE CRIMSON TRAIL is an off-road adventure from the Baltic coast to the Mediterranean Sea. The route combines remote and spectacular dirt tracks and abandoned sites of post-war history in Eastern Europe. These remnants of a defunct empire can be explored amidst the beauty of the Carpathian and Balkan mountain ranges, the Dinaric Alps and the vast North European Plain. I’ve been riding the trail for the last three seasons, and it now connects Estonia’s Tallinn with Thessaloniki in Greece. Finishing the final leg this year was a huge relief as it’s been a rocky road at times. My teammate pulled out this year with injuries and I’ve been patched up in Romanian and Serbian hospitals after crashes on the road. But that danger is part of the game, and you take it as it comes. I believe personal growth only happens outside your comfort zone, and situations of extreme stress are when the strength of the mind is steeled or broken.
