Peak District, England
Try out the brilliant Trials Day training centre, then take your road bike the long way home through the Peak District
Roads to ride: A5004 Buxton to Whaley Bridge – its peachy constant radius corners are quieter than the Snake Pass. Also try A6024 Woodhead to Holmfirth, and Mortimer Road between Midhopestones and Ladybower Reservoir. The A54 Allgreave to Bosley Reservoir is a mixture of gawp-worthy scenery and twisty riding as you leave the National Park. To the south discover hairpins out of Crowdecote, and the curves between Warslow and Onecote. Places to stay: Three Horseshoes, Leek, 300m from the Trials Day training ground (£75/night). Bulls Head Hotel, Youlgreave, stonking old-style pub with great food (£63). Old Vicarage Country House B&B, Wetton (£98). Food and drink: Eat locally-reared lamb at Piedaniel’s Restaurant in Bakewell, drink Barlow’s Betty’s Blonde at Barlow’s Tap House in Chesterfield. Events: Trials Day riding experience, Leek, 07974 399325. John Westlake
