MKI Interceptor 1962-1966
Engine number prefix: YA and YB. Approximate production figure: 1800. Initially available as both a home and export model, the home model was discontinued for 1965. Exports have a small tank with screw-on chrome panels, twin clocks, small toolbox and longer swingarm, while home models have a larger fuel tank, with toolbox and instruments housed in the traditional Royal Enfield ‘Casquette.’ During late 1963, a ‘standard’ version appears; the UK version becomes the ‘deluxe’ and gains 12v electrics. Amal Monobloc carbs now have a float chamber each. From 1965 the standard model is dropped and the Interceptor is only available in export spec.
Engine: All-new, long-stroke, dry-sump engine with nodular iron crank, new crankcase castings, and massive ball and roller main bearings. Ignition: Lucas K2F magneto on both versions. Brakes: A single-sided 7in drum replaces the double-sided 6in brake used on the Constellation on US market models. Not a good move considering the extra urge of the Interceptor. Forks: Basically the same Enfield-made forks as found on the Connie. Other details: Stepped seat on early models, then a flatter version on later machines and a new prop stand. UK models have the speedometer mounted in the traditional Enfield Casquette, while US bikes have separate clocks.
